Building Community Through Food & Media with Joe Morrell

In this episode of Shelling Peas, Chef Ryan Jennings chats with Joe Morrell, Director of Marketing & Sales for the Swan Family of Restaurants and a contributor to City Magazine. From his early days in New England seafood restaurants to shaping Rochester’s hospitality scene, Joe’s journey blends food, media, and community.

A Shared Passion for Food and Storytelling

Growing up in the hospitality industry, Joe pursued a marketing and media degree, leading to internships with City Magazine, Rohrbach Brewing, and Foodlink. Now, he helps drive branding, events, and guest experiences for the Swan Family’s acclaimed restaurants, including Roux, Vern’s, and Swan Dive.

As both a marketer and journalist, Joe has a unique view of Rochester’s evolving food scene, where collaboration is key to success. His work highlights the importance of storytelling in strengthening the hospitality industry. That same passion for connection and shared experiences led him to co-found The Miscela Project, a pop-up dining series with chef Natasha Cotrupi.

Through his work in both restaurants and media, Joe is helping to foster a deeper sense of community in Rochester’s food scene—one that values collaboration, creativity, and connection.
